Novato AAUW's Project Recognition

In 1987, Novato AAUW began a program called Project Recognition, to honor girls in grades 7 through 12 who have cause for pride in themselves and their accomplishments that might go unacknowledged by the community at large, who have overcome difficulties, improved dramatically and/or demonstrated compassion for others.

While young people are often rewarded for high academic achievement, those who display other forms of excellence can be overlooked. Project Recognition seeks nominees who excel through less measurable means, who by their enthusiasm, dedication, and commitment to their schools and their communities are equally deserving of recognition.

Past honorees include a high school girl and recent immigrant who, by striving for excellence, became a role model for other Latino students; a middle school girl who shared her devotion to the performing arts by giving free performances at local rest homes; and a church youth ministry leader known for her compassion towards other teens encountering difficult situations.

Anyone who is involved with the youth of Novato (teachers, youth group leaders, friends, and neighbors) is eligible to nominate a prospective honoree.

Nominations must include following information:
Name, age, school, and grade of the candidate and, if known, the candidate's address and phone number and the name of the candidate’s parent or guardian.
The young person's accomplishments. This information MUST BE SPECIFIC, telling us WHY this girl is special.  A wealth of information is much better than not enough!
The name, address, and phone number of the person making the nomination, and those of the group represented by the nominator, if any.
If possible, additional letters of support from others who know this young person.

Each honoree chosen receives a $100 check and a book especially selected for her. Awards are presented at a special ceremony in May each year.

If you have in mind a possible candidate for a Project Recognition award, please use the Contact link to tell us about yourself and your candidate.  Someone from the branch will respond to you shortly.
